Electrical Panel Upgrade Explained

An electrical panel upgrade, also known as a service panel upgrade, involves replacing an outdated electrical panel with a modern, higher-capacity one. This process enhances the safety, efficiency, and electrical capacity of a home’s electrical system.

Signs Your Electrical Panel Needs an Upgrade

If you’re experiencing any of the following issues with your electrical panel, it might be time for an upgrade. Electrical Solutions of Central Arkansas provides reliable electrical panel upgrade services in Central Arkansas. Here’s what to look out for:

Frequent Breaker Tripping

If your circuit breakers trip frequently, especially when using high-demand appliances like air conditioners, space heaters, or ovens, this could indicate an overloaded circuit or issues with the breaker itself. An upgraded electrical panel can help manage these loads more efficiently.

Flickering or Dimming Lights

If you notice lights that flicker or dim unexpectedly, especially when multiple appliances are turned on at once, this could mean your electrical system is struggling to handle the power demands. An upgraded panel can provide more consistent power distribution throughout your home.

Limited Number of Circuits

Insufficient Capacity: Older homes with outdated electrical panels typically have a limited number of circuits, which can restrict the number of appliances you can safely operate simultaneously. Upgrading to a new panel allows for more circuits, providing greater flexibility and safety.

Fuses Instead of Breakers

Outdated System: If your home is still using a fuse box system instead of circuit breakers, it's a clear sign your electrical panel is outdated. Fuses are not as reliable as circuit breakers and need to be manually replaced after they blow. An electrical panel upgrade will replace this outdated system with modern circuit breakers.

Visible Damage

Physical Signs of Wear and Tear: Rust, corrosion, burning marks, or loose wiring inside the electrical panel are serious red flags that indicate it's time for an upgrade. These signs mean your panel can no longer provide safe power distribution and is at risk of causing electrical hazards.

Common Electrical Panel Repairs

While electrical panel replacements are sometimes necessary, there are several common reasons for needing electrical panel repairs instead:

  • Tripped or Faulty Breakers
Cause of Tripping: Circuit breakers may trip frequently due to overloads or faulty connections. Our electricians can diagnose the underlying cause of these issues, whether it’s due to circuit overloads, faulty breakers, or wiring problems, and make necessary repairs to prevent further disruptions.

  • Fuse Replacement
Blown Fuses: In homes with older fuse box systems, blown fuses are a common issue. We can replace blown fuses with modern circuit breakers, providing more reliable and convenient protection for your home.

  • Loose or Corroded Connections
Wiring Connections: Loose or corroded electrical connections within your panel can cause power loss, sparks, or even fires. Our electricians will inspect and tighten connections and clean any corrosion to ensure the electrical panel functions safely and efficiently.

  • Damaged Wiring
Discolored or Burnt Insulation: If you notice signs of damage such as burnt insulation or discoloration of wires, this is a serious safety concern. Our team will assess the extent of the damage and perform necessary rewiring to restore safety and functionality.

  • Grounding Issues
Proper Grounding: A faulty grounding system can pose significant electrical hazards. Our electricians will ensure that your electrical panel is properly grounded to prevent electrical shocks and other safety risks.

Our Electrical Panel Upgrade Process

An electrical panel upgrade is an essential upgrade to ensure your home’s electrical system meets modern safety standards. Here’s an outline of what you can expect from the electrical panel upgrade process with Electrical Solutions of Central Arkansas:

  • Inspection and Consultation
A licensed electrician will conduct a detailed inspection of your current electrical panel. This includes evaluating its amperage rating, breaker capacity, and overall condition to determine whether an upgrade is necessary. Based on the inspection, the electrician will discuss your electrical needs and advise on the best path for upgrading your panel.

  • Permitting and Scheduling
Your electrician will assist in securing the necessary permits from your local municipality. Permits are required to ensure that the work meets local code standards. After permits are obtained, we will work with you to schedule a convenient time for the upgrade that fits into your schedule.

  • Service Upgrade
In some cases, you may need to upgrade your service with your utility company. This involves increasing the capacity of the wiring and meter that supply power to your home, ensuring it can support a higher amperage to accommodate your electrical needs.

  • Panel Replacement
Our electricians will carefully remove your existing electrical panel and replace it with a new one. The new panel will be configured and labeled according to current electrical codes for optimal safety. Each breaker circuit will be reconfigured and labeled to meet safety standards and improve the organization of your electrical system.

  • Wiring Adjustments
During the panel replacement process, it may be necessary to adjust or replace some of the existing wiring to ensure it’s compatible with the new panel. This ensures that the system remains compliant with current codes and maintains safe operation.

  • Testing and Inspection
Once the new panel is installed, our electricians will perform comprehensive testing of all circuits to verify the correct operation of your electrical system. This includes checking for any safety issues and ensuring everything is functioning as expected. The upgraded panel and system will be inspected to ensure that it adheres to all relevant safety codes and regulations.

  • System Walkthrough and Explanation
After installation and testing, we’ll walk you through the new electrical panel. You’ll receive a detailed explanation of the upgraded system, including the function of each breaker and tips on how to operate the panel effectively and safely.

Benefits of Electrical Panel Upgrades

Upgrading your home’s electrical panel offers several key advantages that enhance safety, efficiency, and future-proofing. Here are the major benefits:

Enhanced Safety

Modern electrical panels come equipped with safety features like Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) and Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs), which help prevent electrical fires and electrical shocks. Upgrading your panel reduces the risk of overloaded circuits and overheating.

Increased Capacity

Newer appliances and electronics consume significantly more power than older models. Upgrading your panel ensures your electrical system can handle increased demands without overloading, can prevent frequent breaker trips and allow you to run multiple appliances at once without issues.

Improved Efficiency

Older electrical panels can be less efficient, causing wasted energy and higher utility costs. Upgrading to a modern panel can enhance the efficiency of your system, potentially leading to lower energy bills.

Adaptability for the Future

An upgraded electrical panel gives you the flexibility to meet future electrical needs. Whether you plan to add new appliances, renovate your home, or install electric vehicle (EV) chargers, a modern panel will have the capacity to support these changes.

Confidence in Your System

Knowing your electrical system is updated and compliant with the latest safety standards provides peace of mind for you and your family. You can rest assured that your home is safe from electrical hazards.

Increased Home Value

When it’s time to sell your home, an upgraded electrical panel can be a selling point that increases its value. Buyers appreciate a safe, modern electrical system that meets current demands and standards.

Some workmen who were doing repairs on our home drove a 2” nail through the wall and into our breaker panel. It made a pretty spectacular flash and knocked out our electricity throughout the home. If that wasn’t bad enough, it was late on Friday afternoon on the first really warm day of summer.
We were convinced we were going to have to check into a hotel for the weekend but we tried calling local electricians anyway. Even those who said they did after hours work didn’t answer. Then we called Electrical Solutions Of Central Arkansas and Blake answered the phone. He not only agreed to help, but he was here within 30 minutes. He quickly assessed the situation and restored our power. He safety checked the damage and set up a time to come back to replace the damaged box.
We are new to Maumelle and although this was a frustrating situation, we are confident that we have found a master electrician and a company we can trust.
Bonus! We didn’t cry when we got the bill. It was very reasonable.
Thanks, Blake!
