What Is an Electrical Panel Upgrade?

An electrical panel upgrade involves replacing an outdated or undersized breaker panel with a modern panel designed to safely handle your home’s electrical demand. Depending on your home’s needs, the project may also include increasing electrical service capacity, adding breaker space, updating grounding and bonding, or making necessary wiring improvements.

Homeowners commonly consider a panel upgrade when remodeling, adding major appliances, installing an EV charger, or when an older panel can no longer safely support the home’s electrical load.

Signs Your Electrical Panel Needs an Upgrade

If you’re experiencing any of the following issues with your electrical panel, it might be time for an upgrade. Electrical Solutions of Central Arkansas provides reliable electrical panel upgrade services in Central Arkansas. Here’s what to look out for:

Frequent Breaker Tripping

If your circuit breakers trip frequently, especially when using high-demand appliances like air conditioners, space heaters, or ovens, it could indicate an overloaded circuit, faulty breaker, or insufficient electrical capacity. A licensed electrician can identify the cause and determine whether a repair, new circuit, or electrical panel upgrade is needed.

Flickering or Dimming Lights

If your lights flicker or dim unexpectedly, especially when appliances or other high-demand equipment turn on, your electrical system may be struggling with the additional load. An electrician can determine whether the problem involves a circuit, wiring, electrical connection, or insufficient panel capacity.

Limited Number of Circuits

Older homes with outdated electrical panels may have a limited number of circuits, making it difficult to safely accommodate today's appliances and electrical equipment. Upgrading to a larger panel can provide additional breaker space and capacity for your home's current and future electrical needs.

You’re Adding High-Demand Electrical Equipment

Adding equipment such as a Level 2 EV charger, hot tub, electric range, HVAC system, tankless water heater, workshop equipment, or home addition can significantly increase your home’s electrical demand. Before installation, a licensed electrician should evaluate your panel’s capacity to determine whether it can safely support the additional load. If your existing system doesn’t have enough capacity, an electrical panel upgrade may be necessary to safely power your new equipment and prepare your home for future electrical needs.

Your Electrical Panel Is Full

If there’s no room for a new breaker in your electrical panel, adding new circuits for appliances, an EV charger, remodeling project, or other electrical upgrades can become a challenge. A full breaker panel may indicate that your home has outgrown its existing electrical system. Our electricians can evaluate your current setup and determine whether additional capacity can be safely accommodated or if upgrading to a larger electrical panel is the best long-term solution.

Visible Damage

Rust, corrosion, burn marks, unusual odors, or signs of overheating around an electrical panel should be evaluated promptly by a licensed electrician. These conditions may indicate damaged components, moisture intrusion, loose connections, or other electrical safety concerns that require repair or panel replacement.

Not sure whether your panel needs to be replaced?

Common Electrical Panel Repairs

Not every electrical panel problem requires a complete replacement. Depending on the condition of your panel and the cause of the problem, an electrician may be able to make repairs instead. Common electrical panel issues include:

  • Faulty or Tripping Breakers
Circuit breakers may trip frequently due to overloads or faulty connections. Our electricians can diagnose the underlying cause of these issues, whether it’s due to circuit overloads, faulty breakers, or wiring problems, and make necessary repairs to prevent further disruptions.

  • Loose or Corroded Connections
Loose or corroded electrical connections within your panel can cause power loss, sparks, or even fires. Our electricians will inspect and tighten connections and clean any corrosion to ensure the electrical panel functions safely and efficiently.

  • Damaged Wiring
If you notice signs of damage such as burnt insulation or discoloration of wires, this is a serious safety concern. Our team will assess the extent of the damage and perform necessary rewiring to restore safety and functionality.

  • Grounding Problems
A faulty grounding system can pose significant electrical hazards. Our electricians will ensure that your electrical panel is properly grounded to prevent electrical shocks and other safety risks.

Our team handles required permitting and coordinates with the utility company when a service upgrade is needed. We’ll also schedule the work at a convenient time and explain what to expect during installation.

3. Panel Installation

We’ll safely remove the existing panel and install your new electrical panel. If necessary, we’ll make wiring, grounding, or other adjustments to ensure the new system is properly configured and code compliant.

4. Testing & Inspection

Once installation is complete, we thoroughly test the panel and circuits to confirm everything is operating safely and correctly. Any required inspections are completed to verify the work meets applicable electrical codes.

5. Final Walkthrough

Before we finish, we’ll label the circuits and walk you through your new panel, answer your questions, and make sure you understand how your upgraded electrical system works.

Benefits of Electrical Panel Upgrades

Upgrading your home’s electrical panel can improve safety, increase electrical capacity, and help prepare your home for future power needs. Here are some of the key benefits:

Enhanced Safety

An updated electrical panel can help reduce risks associated with overloaded circuits, overheating, damaged components, and outdated equipment. Modern circuit protection can also provide additional safeguards against electrical shock and electrical fires.

Increased Capacity

Modern homes rely on more electrical equipment than ever before. An appropriately sized electrical panel provides the capacity needed to operate appliances, HVAC equipment, electronics, and other devices without overloading the system or constantly tripping breakers.

Reliable Electrical Performance

A properly sized modern electrical panel helps safely distribute power throughout your home while providing the capacity needed for today’s electrical demands. An upgrade can also provide additional breaker space for future appliances, remodeling projects, EV chargers, and other electrical additions.

Adaptability for the Future

An upgraded electrical panel can make it easier to accommodate future changes to your home. Whether you plan to renovate, add high-demand appliances, install a Level 2 EV charger, build a workshop, or add other electrical equipment, having adequate panel capacity and breaker space can help prepare your home for what comes next.

Confidence in Your System

Knowing your electrical panel has been professionally evaluated and properly installed provides valuable peace of mind. A modern, properly sized panel can help reduce risks associated with outdated or overloaded electrical equipment while supporting your home’s current electrical needs.

Added Appeal for Homebuyers

An updated electrical panel can be an attractive feature for prospective buyers, especially in an older home where the electrical system has been modernized. Buyers may appreciate knowing the home is better equipped to support today’s appliances, technology, and electrical demands.

Frequently Asked Questions About Electrical Panel Upgrades

How do I know if my electrical panel needs to be upgraded?

Common signs include frequently tripped breakers, flickering or dimming lights, a full breaker panel, visible damage, or an older electrical system that can’t keep up with your home’s power demands. You may also need an electrical panel upgrade when adding an EV charger, hot tub, major appliance, HVAC equipment, or home addition. A licensed electrician can evaluate your system and determine whether repair or replacement is the best solution.

The cost of an electrical panel upgrade varies depending on your existing electrical system, the size and capacity of the new panel, whether your electrical service also needs to be upgraded, and any wiring or grounding improvements required. Electrical Solutions of Central Arkansas can inspect your system and provide an estimate based on your home’s specific needs.

Not every home needs a 200-amp electrical panel or 200-amp service. The right electrical service size depends on your home’s total electrical load, appliances, HVAC equipment, and plans for future additions. Homes with EV chargers, electric appliances, hot tubs, workshops, or other high-demand equipment may benefit from additional capacity. Our electricians can perform a load calculation to determine the appropriate service size for your home.

Not necessarily. Some electrical panels have enough available capacity to support a Level 2 EV charger, while others may require an upgrade. Before installing an EV charger, a licensed electrician should evaluate your existing panel, available breaker space, and electrical load to determine what modifications, if any, are needed.

The time required for an electrical panel upgrade depends on the home’s electrical system, the scope of the project, permitting, inspections, and whether utility coordination is required. Some residential panel replacements can be completed within a day, while more complex upgrades may take longer. We’ll explain the expected timeline before work begins and work to minimize disruption to your home.

An electrical panel repair may be appropriate when the problem is limited to a faulty breaker, loose connection, or another repairable component. Panel replacement may be recommended when the equipment is outdated or damaged, lacks sufficient capacity or breaker space, or needs to accommodate a larger electrical service. An inspection can determine which option makes the most sense for your home.

Yes. An electrical panel upgrade can be an excellent opportunity to install whole-home surge protection. A whole-home surge protector helps defend appliances, HVAC equipment, electronics, and other connected devices against damaging voltage spikes caused by lightning, utility fluctuations, and other electrical events. Your electrician can determine the appropriate surge protection for your electrical system.

If your home still has a fuse box, it’s worth having the electrical system evaluated—particularly if you’re remodeling, adding appliances, or experiencing capacity limitations. Replacing an older fuse box with a modern circuit breaker panel can provide additional capacity and convenience while preparing your home for today’s electrical demands. A licensed electrician can determine whether replacement is appropriate for your system.

Electrical Panel Upgrades for Maumelle Homes

As a Maumelle-based electrical company, ESCA understands the changing electrical needs of homes throughout the community. Established Maumelle homes may have electrical panels that were installed before today’s demand for multiple appliances, home offices, smart technology, and other high-powered equipment. Homeowners who are remodeling or adding equipment such as an EV charger, hot tub, electric range, HVAC system, or tankless water heater may also discover that their existing panel lacks the capacity or breaker space needed for the project.

Newer Maumelle homes can have growing electrical demands, too. Adding an EV charger, workshop, outdoor living space, backup generator, or other electrical equipment may require additional circuits or capacity. Our licensed electricians can evaluate your existing panel, perform a load calculation when needed, and determine whether an electrical panel upgrade is the right solution for your home.

Do not hesitate to call Electrical Solutions of Central Arkansas for all your electrical work. I had them run a dedicated 120V, 20 amp outlet for our future purchase of a treadmill. They did a solid job of running the new circuit with a minimal amount of downtime (power being off). They were thorough, professional, & policed up all of the debris caused by the install. I also had them install electrical surge protection on my main breaker panel (I would strongly recommend surge protection on any house - your electronics will thank you). Very satisfied with the whole job that Electrical Solutions of Central Arkansas did, thank you.

As I type this, Dave or David and Richard just left our home and were extremely professional, courteous, and quick. They arrived on time, 7:27AM and left 8:42. I explained to them upon arrival, do what you got to do, but do not let our cats outside. (they were successful on my request) Before payment, Richard walked me through what they did, showed me what they had done and explained why. Ashley, their phone receptionist was pleasant, professional and attentive to my questions and concerns as I made the appointment for their services. I Highly recommend Electrical Solutions for your electrical needs. We will definitely be using them down the road for our fixtures or unforeseen electrical issues. For those who review for pricing, we shelled out $400. There is an additional fee for using a debit/credit card for payment. For payment, they can email or SMS your invoice which is super convenient and efficient. They do take cash, but DO NOT have change. (understandable). Their electricians, not a bank. They removed and installed a few GFCI outlets, ran some tests, checked other outlets throughout our home and answered additional questions I had about fixtures and installation. All and all, great experience with this company!
